West Malling Golf Club

Ladies’ Section

AGM

 Sunday December 13th

At 10.30am

 Zoom Meeting

(Please note the change of date)

Dear Lady Golfers,

Its that time of year for the ladies’ committee to get to work on preparing for the AGM. To say its more of a challenge this year is putting it mildly.

The ruling on England golf states we must try and adhere to having some sort of meeting, but this information has not been updated since September 2020.

Due to the current situation we have been unable to promote for any lady members interested in joining the ladies’ section committee. For this reason, all committee members have readily agreed to stay onboard and support both Carol Martin (Lady Captain) and Judith Parkhurst (Vice Captain).

Plan of action

AGM Minutes:

If you would like to receive last year’s AGM minutes please send an email to wmgcladies@yahoo.com requesting you wish to be sent a copy. Closing date Sunday 22nd November 2020.

Questions for the AGM:

Any questions that you would like raised at the AGM Zoom meeting please send to me on my personal email  sadiemillgate@gmail.com . Closing date Sunday 22nd November 2020.

Attending the Zoom Meeting

We will be holding this year’s AGM by Zoom and would like to invite you take part on the 13th December at 10.30am. To attend this meeting, send a text message to my mobile on 07712764142 to say you would like to participate, we will use your mobile number to make a What’s App group for the sole purpose of sending you the codes to join the meeting and delete the watts app group as soon as possible once the meeting has finished.

If you have any concerns or questions about using Zoom please get in touch with Debbie Satchell on 07793653381 or email on r.w.s@btinternet.com  who will be happy to guide you through process beforehand.

We will be trying to keep the meeting to the shortest time possible.

Lady Captains report

Well where has the summer gone! Although we have had brilliant weather throughout the summer we are now into the wet Autumn which most of us have found out this week.

The committee and I have been working hard to get back on track with competitions, and those that have been played have been very well supported. It has been a very different method this year with no social gatherings after competitions which have been sorely missed, and with all results being posted on the blog and the IG site, unfortunately this is the only way that competitions can be played safely.

I am sure you have noticed the new score cards that the club are providing ready for the new World h/cap system that will be coming into force in early November. We will keep you informed as to if and when your h/cap will change during this time.

I would like to thank all the ladies that have made contributions to the charity this summer including those that played in the charity eclectic that we ran during the summer months, this seemed to keep us going when competitions were restricted.

We have only 2 competitions left in the diary this year the 13th October is the Vets vs Ladies and on the 18th October the Copper Beech (this Competition is still open for signing up). I am not sure what will happen in December it seems very unlikely that there will be a Christmas meeting or meal but perhaps something can be arranged. The AGM also seems unlikely due to social distancing but we the committee will keep you informed.

I hope you are all keeping an eye on the IG system which I must say a big thank you once again to Julie Harris whom is keeping everything up to date. I know a new system can be daunting to lots of us but once you get to grips with this it can be very easy to use. You can book tee times, check your h/cap and also use it to check on up and coming competitions.

The Captain’s charity day that was held on the 30th August was very successful and raised a brilliant £2410.00 and I would like to thank you all that entered and all those that supported the raffle. On the 25th October we have the Captains Texas Scramble this is a 4 ball of any combination (mixed, ladies!men) with a bacon roll and coffee on arrival at £10 pp  raffle tickets are on sale at £5 per strip.

All I need to say now is happy winter golfing, stay safe and keep well.

Carol  (Lady Captain)

Changes to Medal competition on 4th and 8th August

Ladies, we are meant to be having a medal competition on Tuesday the 4th and Saturday 8th August on the Hurricane course. Unfortunately the course is being hollow tined on the Monday. Normally we would have swapped courses but Spitfire is already very booked. As life is very unpredictable at the moment and we want everyone to have as many opportunities to complete cards as possible, we have decided that we will now make it a stableford competition. We realize this is not ideal but for those who choose to enter it will be the same for everyone. Apologies ladies, but we are trying to make the most of very bizarre times.

The winner of the championship cup is Jill Gambling who will go on to represent West Malling in the champion of champions for Kent. The winner of the handicap cup is Gill Newson, my congratulations to you both
It has been a very difficult time since Covid 19 raised its ugly head and obviously has caused lots of disruption for our ladies golfing. The committee and I are trying to arrange more competitions so please keep checking the blog and the West Malling web site and IG for updates.
Please could I remind you to sign up with the new IG system as this will keep you in the loop and help you book tee times and competitions.
We have had a number of new ladies and also juniors that have joined the club and would like to meet other ladies, so a Meet & Greet is being arranged over 2 afternoons,  the 1st will be on Sunday 16th August at 2pm and the 2nd on Thursday 20th August also at 2pm we will meet for refreshments, introduce ourselves and discuss the running of the  ladies section and help with any questions that may need to be clarified and hopefully play a few holes of golf with our new members.

Well ladies let’s enjoy the rest of the summer, happy and safe golfing.

The draw will remain exactly the same over both days. If you do wish to withdraw please contact me on the number below as soon as possible as we will have to change it if a player is left on their own for day two.

You will need to complete the card for the person that you are marking for, to ensure as few people as possible touch the cards. Please make sure that you fill in all the details clearly, including; the competition, date and time, both players names and the handicaps. At the end of the round you need to verbally confirm the number of shots on each hole with the player and then sign as marker and print the players name clearly in the box they would normally sign.  Once this is completed make sure the player sees the card before posting it in the competition box outside the Pro shop. It is the responsibility of both the marker and the player to make sure this process is followed.

Just to remind everyone that this year the cards will not be entered until later in the week, so in the event of a draw we will not be having a playoff, the winner for both competitions will be decided on count back.

Good luck ladies, play well and enjoy.

Ladies away day

Good morning ladies I am sorry to inform you that the Lady Captains away day at Westerham on the 25th August has had to be cancelled this year. I have been in touch with the event organiser at Westerham whom has informed me that though they can accept non-members onto the course they are unable to offer facilities of food other than a take away sandwich or accommodate more than a group of 6 at any one time. As this is a social event on our calendar I believe it would be best to take the advice of the events organiser and defer this until 2021.

Stableford and Medals

Ladies the following dates will shortly be added to the diary;

Tuesday 4th and Saturday 8th August Medal Hurricane

Thursday 13th August 9 hole Spitfire

Tuesday 18th and Saturday 22nd August Stableford Hurricane

Thursday 27th August 9 hole Spitfire

These will all require online sign up which the office can assist you with. They remain casual entry, please see the previous post regarding safe entry of cards.
Club Championship

The Club Championship is going ahead, it will be on Saturday 25th July and Sunday 26th July.

The ladies will play the Spitfire Course on Saturday and the Hurricane Course on Sunday. We will play in three balls, which will be drawn in handicap order and ladies will remain in the same groups over both days.  The cards will be placed in the box outside the Pro Shop after each round and the results will be announced later in the week.

These measures have been brought in to try and make the competition as safe as possible. It means that there will be no need to arrive too long before your tee time and you can leave straight after if you wish. The management are keen that people do not congregate outside the club in large numbers as there will still be a one metre rule and there will be limited numbers allowed in the bar area at any one time.

We would like to thank the management for all their work to try and ensure that competitions go ahead whilst keeping everyone as safe as possible.

The format will remain the same this year with two competitions running in parallel; The Club Champion will be the lady with the lowest gross score across both days and the Handicap Cup will go to the lady with the lowest net score across both days. The sign up will be online.

Day 1:             SAT 25 July (Spitfire). Seeded tee times
Day 2:             SUN 26 July (Hurricane). Same draw
TEES:              RED – OFF THE BLOCKS
FORMAT:        Medal
COST:             £5 which is for both days.

Good luck ladies, please do not hesitate to text or call me if you have any questions on 07793 653381

Lady Captains report

Lady Captains July update

Hi everyone I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying your golf. It was on the 18th May that the golf club reopened with restrictions and social distancing but I am sure everyone is enjoying being back on the course. From the 4th July social distancing will be down to 1 metre apart though we should all be taking care.
Management have now installed the safer flag system on the greens, though the rakes are still not in the sand bunkers a local rule has been introduced ‘Pick and Place within 6 inches’ in the bunkers due to uneven surface where e club or foot prints are indented in the sand.

We have now been given the green light to resume competitions, these will now have to be signed up online. Debbie Satchell our competition Secretary has already put this on the blog on how the system will work. This will reduce the handling of the cards, please be patient with this as there will be delays on the scores being entered on the system.

The committee and I have agreed that only 3 cards for 2020 will be needed to maintain your handicap for club competitions in 2021.

The club diary on the West Malling site is still incorrect as all the competitions were cancelled due to Covid-19 and only competitions that are listed on the ladies blog will go live ready to sign up.
We hope in August to introduce more competitions including a 9 hole Stableford on the Spitfire, and hopefully by September we will nearly back on track with the calendar. I am sure we are all looking forward to some normality within our lives and what better way than hitting a ball down the fairway.

Sur Stickland had a hole in one on the Hurricane course and due to the restrictions she kindly donated a cheque for the charity. Thank you Sue and well done 👍

Please keep checking the ladies blog for upcoming competitions and if you have any problems please get in touch with a committee member or myself  (phone 07930422872) or on girlie golf app.

Keep safe everyone and see you on the golf course

Carol Martin
Ladies Stablefords and Medals

Following discussions with the management, we are resuming the Stableford and Medal competitions. We will start them initially with a Stableford on the Spitfire on Tuesday 14th and Saturday 18th of July.  All signing up will need to be done online and the fee will be taken straight from your Gold Card. The office will be able to do this for you if necessary. We will confirm the next dates as soon as possible.

We are making some adjustments to the process of entering the cards to ensure everyone’s safety.  As a marker you will need to complete the players card yourself. Please do this as clearly as possible, making sure their name, the competition entered, the date and their handicap are all clear.

Please enter the scores as usual keeping these as clear as possible. On completion of the round, the player and the marker need to verbally confirm the number of shots taken on each hole, then the marker needs to sign the card and clearly print the players name in the signature box the player would usually sign.

Then if at all possible take a photograph of the card, making sure that the whole card is visible, this needs to be sent to the Handicap Secretary, Jean Alback on 07805 261874.
Once this is done the card must be placed in the ladies box outside the Pro Shop. There may be some delay in entering the cards if no photograph is sent of some cards, or if some of the photographs do not clearly show all the information.

We appreciate that this complicates the process, but it ensures that only the marker needs to handle the card for at least 48 hours, so there will be a delay in the results being confirmed if not all the markers submit photographs of clearly marked cards. The process will be regularly reviewed with safety being paramount.

As there have been so few opportunities to submit cards this year the committee has agreed that ladies only need to submit three cards this year in order to qualify for all competitions next year. If this is not possible then ladies can write to the Ladies Committee explaining the reasons and they will consider the possibility of reducing this further, as long as the individual has a current handicap before entering any competition.

Please make sure you are familiar with the provisional rules provided by England Golf, especially regarding bunkers and the flag beforehand in order to keep yourselves and others safe whilst playing.

We hope you all enjoy the opportunity to start playing competitively again.

If you have any queries or concerns please call Debbie Satchell on 07793 653381.

Shekyls and McKean

Ladies, the draws for these competitions have now been completed. They are available via the West Malling website or the IG app. It is the responsibility of the person or persons who is the top of each draw to offer three dates to whoever they are drawn against. Shekyls, McKean and Kip Pulling
Match Play

Ladies, it has been agreed with the club that Match Play competitions can be played as there is no need for an exchange of cards. The Ladies Committee have therefore decided that the Shekyls, McKean and Kip Pulling competitions can go ahead
The sign up will be online as before and should be open very soon. If you do wish to enter, can you please sign up as soon as possible so that we can complete the draw by Monday 15th June. This is so we can allow as much time as possible for each round to be completed.

If you have any questions please contact the Competition Secretaries Debbie Satchell  (07793 653381)

Captains Charity Eclectic fun competition

Hi ladies,
I do hope you are keeping well and enjoying the weather and the golf now that we are fortunate to be playing again.
The committee and I would like to arrange a charity eclectic competition just for fun within the ladies section. There will not be an entry fee but a voluntary donation for the Captains charity would be greatly appreciated. This competition will be played on both courses with a maximum of 8 cards on each course. On a completed round we would like you to take a photo of your card (mobile phone) and send this to Rena Jones (07929 119315) who will keep a record of the scores on a spreadsheet and calculate at the end of the competition the winner on each course. This way there will be no cards touched by other players.
This competition will run from June 1st until 31st October 2020 and a prize will be presented to the winner of each course.
To enter the Eclectic Charity Competition text your name and current handicap to Rena who will put you on the player/entry list.
Remember ladies let’s keep this a fun competition and enjoy.

Stay safe, stay well

Carol (Lady Captain)

Lady Captains update

Hi Ladies just a little catch up. I do hope you and your families are all safe and well during this period of  lockdown. The one thing that has been in our favour is the lovely weather we have had these past 6 weeks and I’m sure all our gardens look in great condition and have kept us busy and fit, it’s just a shame we haven’t been able to play golf, the course looks in perfect condition. The update with Greg by email is that they are still waiting for confirmation to re open and obviously social distancing will still be on going. All competitions have been postponed and this includes the Captains Charity day which had been arranged for the 8th May. The committee and I will discuss the best way forward with the help of the club once we have the go ahead to resume play.
Take care everyone and stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all soon.
Carol

In light of the current Government advice we announce the cancellation or postponement of our competitions until further review on April 27th.

The holding of the Winter Four Ball Final on 6th April is under review and competitors will receive further information in due course.

The Champion of Champions due to be held on the 26th April is now cancelled.  However we would like to rearrange thisfor later in the year. Competitors will receive further information in due course.

Golf Clubs will be suffering financial losses and so it would benefit everyone if KCLGA’s big events could be accommodated in 2020 and restored into this year’s Calendar if at all possible.

All Summer Knockout Competitionshave to be cancelled:

3 Feathers
Holland Trophy
Bradley Cook
TappIn
Coombe Cup
Lohan
Milstede
Captains Cup

Keep an eye out for on-going information on the KCLGA web site.

A Review of the situation will take place on 27th April 2020.

Further information about Unification and the AGMs will follow.

Stableford and Medal Competitions

Ladies, due to the continuing guidance from the Government as well as the various golfing bodies and the club, the committee have decided to suspend all competitions including Stableford and Medals until further notice.

We realise that this will have implications for qualifying for next years competitions and we can assure you that we will modify the criteria if required. We await guidance from England Golf regarding handicaps being maintained, but we will share that as soon as it is available.

At this time our priority is to ensure that everyone stays safe, this means today’s cards will not be entered.

Please take every care when you play and follow the guidance from the club that was sent out today.

If you have any concerns please call or text.

Stay safe ladies.

So unfortunately I regret to inform you that as from today all ladies competitions will be cancelled, this includes the Vets match, Spring Meeting and the Elizabeth Budd.   I feel this is a sensible measure under the present circumstances..  This will be reviewed as and when we receive further advice.
I thank you for your co operation in these trying times, and I hope and pray you all stay safe and healthy.

Shekyls and McKean
Match Play Guidance

If you have entered either the Shekyls or McKean match play competitions, please be sure that you play all matches within the time period allowed. If your name, or names appear at the top of the draw, it is your responsibility to contact whoever you have been drawn against. You should offer at least three dates, including at least one at the weekend. Some of the ladies work full time and we want to be sure that they are able to take part in these competitions.

When offering dates please try and ensure that you have left sufficient time to rearrange should this be required for any reason. The time frames this year are:

Round 1
Round 2
Semi Finals
Final
to be played by
to be played by
to be played by

to be played by
18th May 2020
29th June 2020
10th August 2020
30th September 2020

If you cannot play your match within this time frame, it is the responsibility of those involved to agree how to decide a winner.

If this is not done you will all be disqualified, unless a course closure prevented the match taking place, in which case up to a 1 week extension may be given, or if there are medical reasons, in which case up to a 2 week extension may be given. In either case, a written request must be submitted to the Ladies Committee who will decide whether an extension can be granted.

The rules of all competitions are held in the yellow ring binder, which is kept upstairs in the ladies changing room.

If you have any questions please contact the Competition Secretaries Debbie Satchell  (07793 653381) Penny Rowland (07703 578357)
