April began with sunshine and the start of our main golfing season
with the first trophy competition of the year being played on the 12th
April. – the Elizabeth Budd Trophy. Thanks go to Julie Harris for her
sponsorship and to the winners on the day as we shared out lots of prizes
including nearest the pins for Division 1 & 2.
This day was hotly followed by our first section wide gathering of
the year at the Spring Meeting. The weather was booked and we were lucky to be
bathed in warm sunshine and items from the spring /summer wardrobe had their
first outing for 2015. We had 40 ladies
play and join which was a fabulous showing. We also had the first 12 hole
competition played by our 70 years young ladies ‘the daffodils’ playing for the Daffodil Trophy. At the Autumn
meeting we look forward to the same again and voted for a name which was won by
Del Byrne. There is a write up on the blog and my thanks go to everyone for making
it a day full of fun and laughter and one which I really enjoyed including the
Bottles and Ball sweep where your true colours came through by you eagerly
wanting a prize even if your number has not come up! You know who you are!!
On Wednesday 15th April I was very sad to hear the news
that Viv Allen lost her battle against cancer which returned late last
year. A first for our section as we had
not lost one of our own before, but our section has united and we will continue
to grieve for some time to come. Our
thoughts and prayers remain with the family and we hope that they take strength
from the support shown by everyone. Donations have been collected and we will
soon pay our respects to Viv by attending her funeral on 8th May.
Our friendly season also began with a win at Westerham, a new
friendly venue in 2015. The results have
been shared on the blog and updates on highlights of the day provided for
everyone to keep up. Thanks go to Lisa for organising the day. We then won at
home to Tudor Park so we look forward to more games during the rest of the
season.
Our Bradley Cook team also began their matches and we will know
soon if we will continue to play for the plate as we have a match at Sundridge
at home to play.
The Daily Mail Foursomes was played and we have our winners who
will represent West Malling in 2016.
Well done to Julie Harris and Gill Newson who won with 36 pts.
The wait is over on who our Pearson Team will play in the next
round. We have home and away matches fixed with Sittingbourne so we wish Rena
and the team well. I am looking forward
to playing.
Thank you is one of the best parts of being Lady Captain and this
month my thanks go to the committee once again for showing me the support and
ensuring that things get done as I know the hard work that goes on.
To Jane for moving us up the 21st century as scores are
now posted as soon as the trophy competitions have been completed so that any
errors can be dealt with on the day – she gets my bottle of the month prize as
we had to work through some of the technical issues with using the cloud and it all worked
smoothly.
A bonus bottle goes to Gill for taking on the extra work of
arranging our bank holiday mixed fun comps without complaint – these have
proved popular days and it is good to keep our members off the streets as we
have friendly competition and lots of banter!
Colin Kiddie sponsored the day in May which really showed that the men
love these days and we even sang him happy birthday!
And so to the fundraising, I am thrilled at where we are so far at
this point in the year both the bike ride (scarily next month) and all the
events that you have supported are really ensuring that the monies are being
raised which takes my breath away. My
biggest thanks go to everyone for showing that the club are givers and support good causes.
In May we have lots planned again which means that my diary is
chocker but I am not complaining as it is nice to play a bit more than usual.
Final preparation is planned for Paris and I will try to get more miles clocked
up before the off. We have more mixed events planned and the popular Men vs the
Ladies – can we win? That is up to us!!
Regards g
