July began with us hosting our new event to the calendar for some
years ‘Ladies Invitation Day’, we had
guests from 10 different clubs join our ladies to play in a pairs betterball
competition and a team pink lady competition. The day was successful in that we
can add this to the fixture list for next year. I thank all the ladies who
supported the day this year and I am sure it will grow now that we have road
tested it after many years of not holding such an event at the club. Jill Gambling
and her guest Sandy were our overall winners on the day with a great score of
45 points. The pink lady team winners were Sue Stickland and Helen Cornwell
along with their guests for the day.
Our ladies continue to travel far and wide to opens and I hear we
are winning prizes and ensuring that West Malling is on the map. We are in the final stages of preparation for
our own open and I do hope that the section provides support to the day as this
is one of our main fund raisers for the ladies section throughout the year
along with our medals and stablefords competitions. Lisa has everything under control and I am
looking forward to the day.
Thanks go to the Bradley Cook Team who did get to the second round
of playing for the plate but marginally lost out to Chislehurst at the weekend.
Sue Stickland captained the team and my thanks go to her for sorting out the
matches and keeping us updated with progress via blog posts.
We have had great success and progress to date in the Tappin
Trophy and wish our ladies well in their semi-final match against Sidcup on 21st
August. It is a home draw so I am sure
there will be supporters on the course to cheer our team of three to victory.
Only time will tell and Carol Martin the team captain will no doubt keep us up
to date.
We played our club championship weekend at the end of July and
although the weather wasn’t kind as we were all very wet we do have prize
winners from across the section. Congratulations have been extended to everyone
especially our Handicap winner Elaine Katter who was thrilled to win the trophy
and our Club Champion for 2015 Lydia Doherty who had 2 good days on the course.
A full write up was posted on the blog.
Thankfully, last weekend the weather was much improved and we had
the match all set with the Pegasus golf society where our aim was to win back
the salver. We had success and there is a photo on the blog with most of the
team after our 3½/2½ victory. The
gentlemen were fun and there was lots of banter which began as we were treated
to a pre match breakfast.
The club captain held a fun team Texas Scramble day on Sunday 2nd
August and our ladies supported the event and had separate goodie bags given to
them. There was a good club atmosphere
created on the day and it was nice to see Russ enjoy his role as captain. Money raised for the Freddie Farmer
foundation was in excess of £2000 and Freddie himself made an appearance on the
day.
Sign up sheets have been posted for matches and events during
September and October so hopefully diaries can be coordinated to ensure as many
people join in as possible, we are hoping to get the trophy back from the Vets
and play against the Merlins team and the rescheduled match against the
Wednesday Boys. An updated diary has
also been posted in the changing room which aligns with changes previously
communicated. Our new topsy turvy mixed
competition is causing a stir as the mens championship is being held the day
before meaning the tees will be at the back making the challenge of playing of
the white tees interesting for the ladies taking part. Gill and Shirley are
busy drumming up support for this new fun event to our calendar and I am sure
the men will find it a challenge playing off our Red tees.
So as ever I finish with wishing you all continued good golf
enjoying the remainder of the summer - swing slow ladies.
