When I first started my report I was so happy that the
weather had improved. I was sure summer had arrived last week and it was time
to dig out the summer wardrobe. Alas, it’s only the calendar that has really
started to heat up and is now in full swing.
The ‘friendlies’ are well under way, as are the singles,
ladies pairs and mixed pairs knockouts – good luck to all those taking part.
Last month we had two successful Afternoon Teas at Spadework.
Thanks to Rena for drumming up support and collecting in the money and a big
Thank You to our section for attending this event. We had 21 of us on Saturday 16th
April and 25 of us on Tuesday the 19th.
Spadework is very grateful for all that we are doing. The
idea behind having the Afternoon Tea was for members to visit and see what
there is to offer. The nursery is full
of bedding plants, the farm shop has great local produce including jams,
chutneys and even Chapel Down wines and their hampers are fabulous gifts. The food was excellent in the Café with
homemade cakes and scones. The hospitality
by the staff was warm and friendly – so do pop in and take a look if you are
passing!
This month we have the Quiz Night on Friday 13th hosted
by Jeanette and Bernie and we currently have 12 teams of 6 people signed
up. There is still time to get a team together;
it doesn’t have to be made up of golfing friends or members. I love the double
act with our hosts and it is always a very entertaining evening.
12th May brings our first summer 9 hole stableford
competition. This was specially
requested by our Swinging 60’s section so that we can all have the chance to
complete 9 holes in the summer months too.
Further dates in the calendar for the Thursday 9 hole Stablefords are:
23 June, 21 July, 25 August and 29 September
Active handicap -
Please note that the new CONGU rules put into place in January states that to
keep an active handicap players have to complete 54 holes in one year. Any
combination accepted i.e. – 1 x 18 holes and 4 x 9 holes = 54 holes.
So ladies, if you wanted to play all six 9 hole competitions
(front 9 of the Spitfire only) this is now accepted to keep your active
handicap under CONGU ruling.
Entry to trophy
competitions – However, West Malling
Ladies Section still require 6 cards for entry into any trophy competition and
only 2 nine holes are accepted as part of the six.
If you require any additional information speak to our
Handicap Secretary Jane Woodward.
The Inter-society competition sign-up is displayed – The
ladies section is classed as one society – the sizes of the groups will
determine the format for the winners. So “Come on ladies”, let’s give the men a run
for their money!!!!!
There is also still time to sign up for the Spadework Bank
Holiday Mixed Team Texas Scramble. Due to the popular response this will be a
tee time start – details to follow shortly.
Malcolm and I have had some takers for our ‘2 Captains
Challenge’. The first match is on Friday
13th against Rob and Debbie Satchell. If you fancy a competitive ‘fun’ round of
golf the sign up sheet is on the Captain’s board in the main corridor. There is
availability all through the summer months and we would love to play with as
many members as possible.
Week commencing 23rd May will see a Pink Buggy on
the course! This buggy will be available
for one week only, and all hiring fees will go to Breast Cancer Research. What
a great idea – book early to avoid disappointment.
Vice Captain Gill Newson….. You are a star!! Thank you so much for
negotiating with your boss at F&I Financial Services – such a generous
donation of £250 to Spadework. I am extremely grateful and a very lucky Lady
Captain.
Add this £250 donation together with £240 raised at the mixed
away day at Boughton from competitors purchasing mulligans - makes a total
amount of over £2,500 raised to date!
Lastly, on a personal note, Colin and I would like to thank
you for all your well wishes, support and condolences at this sad time for our
family - Colin’s dad Keith lost his battle against cancer last month. We really do appreciate your kind words.
So - Happy Golfing Ladies – Enjoy!!!
Lisa Kiddie
