September
already! I can’t believe where this year
is going!
Last month was
the first time we tried out the ‘West Malling Ryder Cup’. This was a 2 day event that was supported by
40 golfers. The Club Captain Malcolm and myself took on the Vice Captains, Roy
Allen and Gill Newson and divided players into the two teams. It was great to see everybody getting into
the spirit, even wearing their team colours and then roast baguettes and potatoes to
round off the weekend while the results were worked out!
Congratulations
to our Captains’ team on their winning performance and a gallant effort by the
Vices' Team! There were some close
matches on the Sunday with a new format – 2 Ball Texas Scramble.
Tuesday 16th
August was The Ladies Open – we had a full house with 90 ladies descending on
our club.
Congratulations
Gill Newson for such a successful day. You
co-ordinated the whole event magnificently and the feed-back from our guests
was so positive – very proud Lady Captain hearing what a great job we had done
hosting the day.
The guests were
in good spirits with team outfits and very imaginative names. The ladies from Rochester and Cobham aka ‘The
Ashley Roberts Fan Club” also had printed tee-shirts with Ashley’s face in a
heart shape!! Our Pro Ashley looked horrified in a smiling sort of way.
However, this
Open could not work without the volunteers from our ladies section and our
husbands and friends that also gave up their time. So thank you to everyone who took part and especially
the ‘ball spotters’ - not always the most popular role – but definitely one of
the most needed.
Thank you to
our ladies who donated bottles and balls for the raffle – we achieved £302 for
Spadework Charity.
My husband
Colin and I managed to take a short break this month watching wild life in the
bush in South Africa. Then straight back
for the Captains’ 9 and Dine on Friday 2nd followed by the Mixed
Topsy Turvey .... and just in case you didn’t hear ………… I GOT A HOLE IN ONE ……. on
the 16th green of the Spitfire!!!!!!
Suffice to say
I really am having a fun year!!! First
one in our family to do it!!
The
celebrations carried on to the following Tuesday when 22 ladies went to Nizels
for the Lady Captain’s Away Day – this was a fun team competition and
congratulation to:
1st
Place - Lindsay, Stella and Judith
2nd
place – Gill Newson, Pat and Diana
3rd
place – Helen Cornwall, Sue Gofton and Vivien Warren
Nearest the Pins
were won by Lindsay Hart and Stella Pitt. This was followed by an Afternoon
Tea. The Prosecco kept flowing – just in case some ladies missed the
celebration on Sunday!
Thank you
ladies for supporting this event.
Saturday 10th
September was another first in our calendar – Ladies v Breakfast Club.
The Breakfast
Club normally tee off at 7:00am on a Saturday morning, regardless of the
weather or the time of year. We negotiated a more sociable meet for breakfast at 9:30
and took up the challenge. We all had a
great day and enjoyed the company, added to the fact that the ladies won 4 -
3!!
Another
fabulous trophy for our cabinet. Thank
you Breakfast Club for being great hosts and taking the inaugural loss in good
spirit.
Autumn Meeting
– Wow! One of the hottest days in September since the 1960’s. It was a challenge just to get round the
course! It was a lovely day with a great
turn out and I love the fact that our senior Swinging 60’s are still such a big part
of both the Autumn and Spring Meetings.
