2015 Diary changes / updates

Stablefords in February will be played on the Hurricane and not the Spitfire
Continued work will mean that once again we will move the Monthly Stableford competitions for February - all will be played on the Hurricane.  This affects Tuesday 3rd Feb and Saturday 7th Feb as the one later in the month was due to be played on the Hurricane.

Valentines fun - 10 Feb and 14 Feb per the diary
I am calling it Cupid Pairs !
I have prepared the sign up sheet for this fun event which will be posted on  24 January.
Cost is £2 entry per person and £1 for nearest the pin. Format : Drawn Pairs better ball stableford.
Sign up and I will draw the pairings and post the draw a week before.    I do hope you can join in.  Monies raised will go to the 2015 lady captains charity.

Mixed Yard of String now 29 March 2015
This competition date has been moved from 5 April to 29 March to avoid the busy Easter weekend.

Mid Week Trophy 30 June
Apologies I added this to the calendar on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday - thank you to the vigilant ladies who pointed out my mistake.  It was one that both myself and office missed. It has been moved to Tuesday 30 June.

Winter Eclectic
At the last committee we discussed the winter eclectic. Only one person entered so the competition has be voided.   I know you are all saving yourselves for the competition in the summer which starts in April.

Dates confirmed

Pro Comp
Duncan and the pro team have once again agreed to run the pro comp late afternoon / evening event.  I can confirm this will be Monday 13 July.  For those who haven't played in this before it is a fun evening and to have to support of the pro shop who run this event for the captain's charities is amazing.  Prizes as ever are worth winning and it is a team event that groups across the club take part in.

Ladies vs Merlins match
The Merlins met in December and have added the Ladies vs Merlins to their calendars for 2015.  The date for our diary is Sunday 20 September.
For committee members this will mean us moving the Committee Cup which we can agree when we next meet.

Next week I am due to meet with Russ and the Office to agree other events that I listed to be confirmed so will post an update soon if any dates are confirmed.

I will pop a note on the board and get a copy of the diary reprinted in early Feb.

Any questions / problems please call/text/email.

Lady Captains Report January 2015

Time has whizzed by since the 30th November and becoming lady captain and my thanks go to everyone for their support and good wishes on the day and since and for the great turn out afterwards in the 3 ball Texas on what turned out to be a lovely day when the sun shone.
I then had 12 days of Christmas events spaced out from the 2nd – 14th December before going off on my annual Christmas holiday These days were filled with 3 key events when Christmas spirit was In abundance.
On 2nd December, the first event which I was able to host was held. 47 brave ladies played on a very cold wet December day - thankfully it was 12 holes and the clubhouse was a welcome retreat at the end. Some ladies conquered the course on the day and our winners were Gina Wilson winning her first golf trophy with Diana Scott in 2nd and Lindsay Hart in 3rd. Well done ladies!
Russ Berryman the club captain for 2015 came along to start the comp on the day and he showed us his sense of fun by dressing in a santa romper suit   My thanks go to Russ - and it only cost me a pint!  Lunch followed with xmas earings, jumpers and badges being worn.  More ladies joined the lunch which brought our number to 52  and everyone took part in the my sweet tooth quiz and the winner was a very proud Eunice and her gang of helpers who donated the tin of roses to another worthy cause.
We were able to subsidise the lunch this year substantially as we had some reserves in our well managed accounts so thanks go to all the committee for 2014 and for them agreeing to ensuring we were able to give something back to our ladies section.  I hope ladies this can continue and we will keep an eye of how this can be done in future.
On the 4th December  Lisa and I popped into say hi to our Swinging 60s ladies lunch – getting an invite was lovely and I am glad I was able to join to see the ladies enjoy their festive meal even if I didn’t have time to stay for long.  The glass of red wine I enjoyed certainly brightened my day along with the hunks calendar which was a very popular secret santa present.
My husband’s favourite events during the year are the mixed comps and the 14th December was no exception.  We were drawn with a new man / lady and attacked the spitfire best we could on a day when the frost arrived to provide pretty views but impossible to stop the ball on the green!  Gill wrote a report regarding the day and this was posted on the blog a few days after the event.  My favourite bit was the clap o meter to judge the Christmas jumpers which were worn. There was certainly a lot of noise.
Fundraising began almost right away and pre the charity starting I was picking up donations to get the year underway.  Thank you to everyone. It is the opportunity I really do feel extremely lucky to do.  The Diabetes Centre at Darenth Valley Hospital who look after Lee are looking forward to meeting and joining some events at the club this year and will be very grateful for any monies they receive. West Malling Ladies Section will be on their literature I am sure in 2016.
The Captains drive in sweep was well supported and won by Toni Twort who obviously had faith in me not duffing the ball off the tee on new years day – thank you to everyone as we raised just over £120 and to Lisa for beginning her year as our fabulous lady vice captain in a lovely way by selling – a natural talent I am sure we will see more off!!
Sponsoring a Christmas bauble was another idea in December and Kate enjoyed decorating the tree and the bar staff pushed the baubles to different groups across the club to ensure the total raised was £190. – Lisa donated the balls and had fun buying them as she really does do Christmas unlike me – so another big thank you.
On the same theme the ladies changing room had a new feature this year.  Lesley Shott had the idea to recognise the generous donations from across the section instead of sending Christmas cards and it is a tradition I am sure will continue.  Lesley gets a bottle of wine for the committee idea of the month which I have started as much to recognise this is a team effort and to ensure the ideas keep coming.
The Drive in on New Years Day was a crazy day. After celebrating my first new year in 20 years in the UK I had to ensure I turned up in my lady captain uniform and did the drive in  – I didn’t quite outdrive Russ but got a respectable 171 yards on the hurricane. Support from across the club was amazing and there was standing room only in the bar so again thank you for coming to support this great West Malling Tradition to get 2015 off to a great start.
My hopes for the year is as I have said that everyone feels included and that everyone is recognised for the work that goes into ensuring administering and running the competitions and managing the ladies funds is done correctly and fairly.
The committee has changed and in this, my first report of the year I introduce everyone formally into their new role and hope that you know and appreciate the time given up to complete these essential roles for the section.

Changes to January 2015 Calendar

Ladies there have been changes made to the January playing calendar.

The first hole on the Spitfire remains closed during January  (weekdays) so all Stablefords will now be played on the Hurricane and these will be 18 Hole competitions.
Lorries will continue delivering during January and this is due to be completed for the first week in Feb when we hope to then have scheduled competitions back on the Spitfire.
I will review with the office w/c 26 January and provide an update for the February comps.
Apologies to those who planned to play in the 9 hole this month but the change is necessary.

The Resolution Putter Competition is being played this weekend for Men only.
Ladies could have had their own competition but I was made aware of problems from last year too late in the day to ensure this would be run properly so there is now a stableford competition for a qualifying card which makes up for last week when the course was closed on Saturday.

Below is a copy of the January calendar with updated changes.
