Christmas 12 Hole

It was lovely to see so many ladies at the Christmas lunch, both old and new, so thank you all for coming along to enjoy what I thought was a very nice carvery.
Thank you also for buying raffle tickets and baubles - the proceeds of which will be split between My Shining Star and Diana's charity New Life, supporting children with severe disabilities.

The raffle raised £212, and hopefully those of you lucky enough to have won were delighted with your prize (Rena Jones get yer hair cut!!). Judy Kaye won the main prize of a Birchwood Park Fourball, but kindly gave it back saying she wouldn't use it (honest to a tee) and so chose something else instead. As you all always bring prizes, I thought it would be nice for a change not to, so you weren't at risk of winning your own wine back!

The results:
NP on 3rd: Cheryl
NP on 7th: Kim

1st: Debbie T (24 points)
2nd: Sue G (21 points)
3rd: Joyce (20 points)

Debbie is also the winner of the Kent Lady Trophy and gets a commemorative pitch repairer and back marker.

Well done all.

Thanks to Diana for the beautiful flowers on the table, and how kind of you to donate them to the society table that was set up for tomorrow.

Thanks to Kim for sorting the competition and meals and battling conflicting information!

Thanks again to those of you who returned Smartie tubes from the Spring Meeting - I hope you are pleased with your large tube which you just have to eat the contents from!! Carol M: Diana has yours; Lynne & Pete: Jane has yours (good luck...) and Gina: I still have yours for your collection tub (apologies, I didn't have the most up to date list!).

Joyce has lost a Ping pitching wedge, so if anyone hears about one being found or handed in please let her know.

I do believe this is my last missive in earnest - not around at the Mixed so over to Anne and Diana for that one!

It's been a pleasure and I'd like to wish you all a very Merry and fun filled, relaxing Christmas.
Jill aka Elsie aka Ellie and soon to be PLC! x

Men v Ladies Charity Fun

What can I say... a fabulous winter day for golf ... ok, a bit slippy and muddy but the challenge was on!
Julie and Joe had done the draw, we'd co-opted a few Merlins for the ladies (thanks Paul R for chivvying them) and the scene was set, with 'dobber' sheets provided by Cap'n John and a NP each.

Some fantastically close matches and a few hilarious moments throughout...

Apparently we lost, but I don't care to state the score, I'm sure we need a recount! A great effort everyone, including those in Portugal!!

The fiver in an envelope, fun fines (some voluntary), kind donations and generously return winnings by Gill and that nice man whose name I can't remember (Richard?), meant you all raised a magnificent £695 for the charities. AWESOME!

There were Vice balls for notable amusing moments and bottle of wine for Lew and my NPs. Duncan also got one as compensation for giant leaf interference ..!! Well done Lynne on your superior knowledge on the tops & tails (don't always listen to Pete!)

Massive thanks to Julie, Joe, Pete and John for sorting the fun and fines on the day.
What a great day.

Lady Captain Report - Sep & Oct

Lady Captain – September 2018

Lady Captain’s Away day:
A slightly cool day awaited us at Poult Wood, but bacon rolls set us off on the right foot. I had great fun playing a couple of holes with each group, challenging them to either out drive me or get nearer the pin (or actually the green on my part – Anne won hands down on that one!) Small tins of alcohol were the reward.  Everyone was a winner in my eyes, but those who took home the bacon were: 1st: Joyce, Judy and Penny with an outrageous 89 points. Well played indeed!
2nd: Sally, Cathy and Kim with an impressive 84 points.
3rd: Debbie, Molly and Rena with a commendable 77 points.

NP on 5: Judy (bravo)
NP on 17: Rena
LD on 11: Kim

Thanks to Rena for point blank refusing to offer change to anyone and making extra money for charity.

Overnighter
Goes without saying that what happens on tour stays on tour....
But a great time was had by all (well if you didn’t, I didn’t hear about it and don’t really care – hahaha). A massive thank you to Gill for organising with Dale Hill and getting the numbers right at the end. Not an easy task and the one thing I know I have to do next year – just when I thought I was safe. There were prizes for both days and nearest the pins on each course each day too, so plenty of chances to shine.
Huge thanks to Kim for the as ever amusing evening entertainment - what a tough act to follow.

Autumn Meeting:
A great day as always with a fantastic turn out from across the ladies section - thanks to you all; Kim for organising the draw and food orders, Sally for sorting the finances, Diana for doing the cards, and again for the lovely table and changing room flowers, and especially Vicky Richardson for her sponsorship of the event (huge apologies for not saying so at the presentation ceremony, it was on the sign up sheet but no excuse). I telephoned her afterwards. I thought the pie and pudding were excellent, certainly there were clean plates all around, so well done chef!

Also a huge thank you to those ladies who have returned their Smarties tubes: Lindsay, Helen, Denise, Pat, Carol M, Judy Kaye (plus Kim’s Mum & Dad and her sister & brother-in-law). If anyone still has their tube, please do carry on collecting change!

Thanks to all who brought raffle prizes and to everyone for buying tickets, and thanks to Denise and Vicki Common for selling and tearing them up! We made a fantastic £185 for charity. You rock ladies!

The Ladies v Merlins – what can I say but a resounding 5-1 win, much to Malcolm’s distress! Great fun as always and played in the right spirit. Thanks to all who played.

Lady Captain – October 2018

This month it’s mostly a results kinda thang:

Ladies v. Wednesday Boys
A very close match was had by all – we lost 3 ½ to 1 ½  - but good as it was Laurie Day’s Birthday.
My thanks to all for taking part and Sue Gofton for playing captain on the day.

Ladies v. The Vets
The return fixture on the Spitfire, would this be revenge at last…?? Err, no!! Yes they played off the White tees, but no they weren’t very far back and yes, there are still some most ludicrous handicaps held by the Vets… no comment!
A good atmosphere and chatty banter on the whole.
Thanks ladies for your valiant efforts, a loss of    to
Special thanks to Rena for captaining the side.

Ladies v. Breakfast Club
Despite the matches starting later than the boys are used to, and there being a couple of dodgy subs for them…. It didn’t pay dividends.. Although most matches did go to the wire, we went down 7-1, so the losing streak continues!! However, worth mentioning Sally and Shirley for their magnificent victory.

So that’s it for the inter-club matches this year. It’s not a record I shall boast about, but let’s just remember the Merlins (5-1) and Pegasus (6-3) victories shall we!!

A bright spot to end on is the Quiz Night (full report is already on the blog) but a BIG THANK YOU to all 11 teams who took part, hosted by Gary Johnson from RacingEvents, Brands Hatch.
Money raised as follows: Raffle: £290, T & T: £64

Special mention to Jane Woodward for her wining £100 bid for Gary's Brands Hatch hospitality package. Very generous and very much appreciated.

The Tribute Ball – 10 November, the BIG ONE on the horizon. Need to drum up more interest otherwise the club will open it up to outsiders to make the money. We have been warned!

Finally, my sponsored walk for My Shining Star is a go go… Lydia is looking at the route for me so I shall mercilessly ask for money as cash, online through Just Giving: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jill-gambling or by text (Text ETRK63 £10 to 70070).

As the AGM approaches, I’ll send out reminders about any Smarties tubes that might be filling up!

The year is nearing its conclusion, nothing disastrous so far, but there’s still time!

Jill

Jill

Ladies V Merlins.. RESULT!!

An excellent day was had by the ladies.... not so much for the Merlins!! Plenty of early banter (from the usual gobby suspects!) with major discussion over the format... ours was rejected... did it put us off??? NO WAY JOSE!

Absolutely thrilled with a 5-1 win. Some brilliant results in that too, finishing them off early or late, it didn't matter, they had to work for every scrap, birdies or eagles to win or halve... hilarious.

Thanks to you all, another great victory, we have snatched the cup back!

Next up: Wednesday Boys (10 Oct), the Vets (16 Oct) AND The Breakfast Club (20 Oct). Who thought October was a quiet month!? Sign-up sheets in the changing rooms.

Thanks again
Elsie

Lady Captain Report – August 2018

A seemingly quiet month for me, although it doesn’t feel that way, so maybe I have missed something critical….

Oh well, there was the small matter of the Ladies Open of course!! Well done Diana on that one – massive thanks to you and all the ladies who helped to make it such a success. All the teams I spoke to said how enjoyable it was, from the signing in table to starters, ball spotters and food.
Many thanks to everyone who helped in all and every way, it really is appreciated.

The raffle raised £416 for My Shining Star, and I only had to replace one raffle prize that was left on a table and snaffled by another person…. Seriously.

Lady Captain’s Away day is just a few days away now and I’m looking forward to that very much, and that’s swiftly followed by the Overnighter – September is a busy golfing month, what with these and the Autumn Meeting also on the horizon.

A few movers and queries and upcoming events:

Joe’s Charity Day. This was planned as usual for the first Sunday in October, unfortunately, the way the calendar has panned out this year, that means it now clashes with a big men’s Whitbread (or Invicta) league thing, so, we have had to move it, as Joe is rather integral to it. It will now be November 18th. Yes, I said November – no dates could be agreed or were available for all relevant parties.

The Ladies v Merlins is in the diary (15 Sep) but I’ve yet to get confirmation on this… I’ll get on it and advise soonest.

The Ryder Cup has yet to be rescheduled, so may fall by the wayside this year – we’re running out of days.

Capt v Secretary (Tue 2 Oct) – I won’t be here (I shall be in Spain) so I’m going to kindly ask Diana if she will be able to be my Captain for this one. I will be back for the Saturday one. And the Committee Cup I’m currently struggling to be here for, so will take views on when we could move this to.

The Wednesday Boys (10 Oct) and the Vets (16 Oct) are the next big challenges the ladies need to focus on…

The Quiz night is still planned for Oct 12 (see previous blog post - now changed to 19th) and I am approaching someone with a view to running it for me – nothing against Jeannette and Bernie, just trying something different.

The Captain’s Ball on 10 November, again, we’re doing something different – an ABBA Tribute. Otherwise, same format, tables of 10, £40 a head, 3 course meal (menu TBC) and £20 a raffle ticket (no tatt for prizes guaranteed!)

There’s bound to be something I forgot, but for now, that’s it from me.

Jill
