LOTTERY SATURDAY 14TH MARCH 2015

No winners this week

Thursday, 12 March 2015

We played a Pearson match today at West Kent, we knew it would be difficult and so it proved.
Caroline Harrison was first off, she played to her handicap and still lost 2 and 1, next Georgina our Captain unfortunately lost on the 18th.  Carol Eldridge lost 6 and 4, she had to birdie a hole to win it, her opponent was on fire.
I was getting a little worried, to say the least!!
Then things got better, Gina Wilson digging deep to win on the 19th, Leslie Shott winning 3 and 1,
Diana Scott 2up and last but not least, Lisa Kiddie sealing our win with a 2 and 1 result.
Well done ladies.
Thanks to Julie Harris and Helen Cornwell for their support.
Our final match in this first round is Friday 27th March at West Malling, if (when) we win we go through to the next round. COME ON WEST MALLING !!

Lady Captains Report - March 2015

Fundraising has been a real positive focus during the latter part of February and into March.
As we celebrated Valentine’s Day on the 14th February it was the weekend ladies turn to support the Cupid Pairs Competition. Winners were congratulated on the day and results were posted on the blog.  Overall, the two days added a further £108 to the lady captains charity for the year.
On 25th February, I was able to go with Jane and some other ladies to Maidstone Hospital for the cheque presentation to Breast Cancer Kent.  It was a real pleasure to see the unit and meet the doctors who could not have been more grateful for the fantastic lady captain charity effort from 2014.  We heard the work the unit were doing and got a sense of the difference that can be made and once again what the funds raised have been used for.  Jane has shared a photo on the blog as we posed with the big cheque which was presented. Very special!
I have also added another charity to my fundraising for the year which will get donations from the London to Paris Bike ride in June.  It is the Kent Oncology Centre in Maidstone (via Macmillan Cancer Support) it will be nice to support another local charity. Joe Harris and I launched our online fundraising site just over 3 weeks ago and we will be giving an equal split from both our totals to each of the nominated charities and the amounts will also include gift aid to boost the totals. Lesley has agreed to report this as part of her treasurer’s report too later in the year.
I am also pleased to let you know that Darent Valley has already been in contact to let us know that the money has started to reach them.  It will mean the Diabetes Centre wish list will be fulfilled much earlier than I ever imagined.   Hearing that certainly has spurred Joe and I on as we ramp up our training for June!   I will remember that as I tackle yet another hill on my training rides.
On 27 February, another £100 was added to the charity pot as Yvonne Gormley kindly hosted an afternoon with Prosecco and specially made cakes for the occassion at her new home. Pictures and a small write up from the day has been posted on the blog.
I also thank those who take part in the roll up on Sundays.  Each week a £1 stake is wagered by each person who plays and more often than not those who win donate the total to the charity and the collection tin needs changed once again.  Little and often certainly boosts the funds and ensures all the ideas we come up with seem to gather lots of support.
Spring seems to have shown a proper appearance as we welcomed March with some days filled with sunshine so I hope you have all been able to enjoy some golf with less mud although I think it will be some time before we stay clean out on the course.
The Cecil Leitch 5 club competition was well supported and there is a write up on the blog separately to keep you all up to date.  Thanks go to Carol Eldridge and Sue Gofton as this was the first competition of the year that they organised in their new dual role and they ensured we were all kept in line with the draw being completed in good time.
I would also like to point out that we have to follow the competition rules. I urge you to ensure you sign up for competitions before draws are done as you cannot just add your name to the end of the competition once the draw has been done, you have to sign up before the closing date so please watch the noticeboard as the season picks up. . A reminder of the rules will be posted on the noticeboard shortly outlining the process and a note added to all draw sheets.  Thank you in advance for making life easy for your committee.
We have much to look forward to as the season ramps up and the competition team have been posting the competition signup sheets for April already.  We are hoping to welcome many of you to the Spring Meeting on Tuesday 12th April.  The draws for the summer knockouts will be drawn shortly so hopefully you have signed up at the office, if not it is not too late!
Winter knockouts are drawing to a conclusion and we wish the finalists all the best.  Results are on the noticeboard and we will announce the winners on the blog once the match has been played.
Our Pearson campaign continues and we have two matches left to play against West Kent during March.  Our group is close so the team need some good wins and I know everyone will be out there trying their best. So Good Luck to them.
As we celebrate Easter I look forward to seeing you at the Easter fun competitions planned and remain hopeful that the weather is kind.
Also during the month I met with Kate and we discussed the work that continues on the Spitfire.  The management team are sending out regular updates in the newsletter and other circulars so hopefully we will see a difference going into April as activity on the first hole remains on schedule.
I am also delighted to confirm two new events for 2015. The first being,  a ladies invitation day, which will hopefully showcases our ladies section and where you can invite a friend and host a nice golfing day in July.  The signup sheet is already on the board as we need to gauge numbers early given this is a new day in our already busy calendar.
To celebrate the golfing year and to have an evening with ladies only the committee will help me to host a Thanksgiving evening in November (26th) details of which will be confirmed nearer the time, but please note the date in your diary as there are few opportunities to have the section gathered and this one should celebrate successes this year.
So you will agree lots to look forward to so I sign off as usual  by wishing you all continued happy golfing and swing slow.
Regards g

Massive THANK YOU - charity fund-raiser 27th Feb 2015

As you will have read and seen the invitation from Yvonne Gormley on 27 February. The charity fund-raiser was held and it was a lovely afternoon which was basked in 'near' spring like sunshine.

Yvonne opened her beautiful home to us ladies and allowed us to tour her new house.  A few ladies wanted to move in but were turfed out at 5pm as Yvonne had other plans for the evening.

The Prosecco flowed (she certainly knows the way to my heart!) and Yvonne had some beautiful cakes made especially for the occasion.  Monies raised for the charity totalled £85 on the day with a few donations pending from ladies who could not make the event but still wanting to make a contribution.

I have said a massive THANK YOU to Yvonne but extend it to all those who supported the event.   'Little and often' is my motto for the charity this year and I am constantly amazed at your generosity.  It was nice also to see everyone in a social atmosphere where topics of conversation were not just about golf!

I include a few photos from the afternoon and send you each a massive hug.

Ladies Invitation Day confirmed 7 July 2015
As many of you know it has been my intention to host a Ladies Invitation Day at West Malling. I am thrilled that we can fit one into our busy calendar and the the management are happy to support this day. I know this event was run some years ago but it would be great to welcome some of our golfing friends to the club as I know like me you get invites to other such events.

I am posting a sign up sheet in the notice board now so I can gauge how popular this event will be so that we can accommodate as many ladies as possible. Please sign up once you have a confirmed guest.

Entry will be £35
this will include - Guest green fee / High Tea and Prizes following a 18 hole Pairs Stableford Betterball & Team 'Pink Lady' Competition. Prizes will be awarded to 1st & 2nd Pair and also best ‘Pink Lady’ team.

If you have any ideas for the day I am more than happy to consider as if supported it could become a regular event in our busy summer calendar.

End of the golfing season - Ladies Section Thanksgiving 26 November 2015
It seems a long way off and I am really not wishing away the year but I would like to invite all ladies to a special Thanksgiving night in November.  It will coincide with Thanksgiving in the States and details will be confirmed later in the year.
Basics - All Ladies will be welcomed to the club by myself and the committee and greeted with a glass of Prosecco.  We are planning to kick off the night at 7.30pm and finish no later than 11pm.
We will have a celebration and presentation of sorts of us as a section.   I do hope we can celebrate our highs from the year and give thanks.   So watch this space but in the meantime please add to your busy diaries and block the time out.   It will be a smart affair and I am hopeful you can all dust off your Little Black Dresses and bring a bit of glam to our surroundings.

Friendly Matches for 2015

Lisa Kiddie has posted the sign up sheet for the friendly matches scheduled this year so please sign up.   Our first match is a  week day fixture which is new to our calendar AWAY to Westerham.
Hopefully we will continue to field strong teams and carry on the spirit of the days which I know we were very successful last year. Contact Lisa if you need any further details as she will be liaising with the clubs for arrangement on the day.

A change to a fixture is Away to St Augustines in September. We have agreed to play this match on Saturday 26 September so please change this in your diaries. The previous date clashed with the popular Bearstead mixed open.
Updated for our Lady Captain

Competitions in March

In order to make the competition qualifiers we have to continue to have our medals and stableford competitions held on the Hurricane. This means sadly we cannot do a 9 hole competition. Competitions affected this month are:

10/3 & 14/3 :       9 hole stableford which will now be an 18 hole stableford on the Hurricane
17/3 & 21/3         EWGA Medal which will be played on the Hurricane
All other competitions remain as published in the diary.

I will speak to the committee at the next meeting with a proposal to schedule some additional 9 holes comps later in the year to ensure that these can be included as the eligible cards. An update will be published here on the blog and on the noticeboard.

Work on the Spitfire continues and I will update with any developments as and when I hear.
