Pam Honeybone @ 80 years young

On Thursday 13th August one of the founding members of the Swinging 60's Pam Honeybone, celebrated being 80 years young.
The weather may have been a tad damp but the sun shone in West Malling clubhouse for Pam and all her friends.

We were organised by Joyce P and Belinda and enjoyed a light lunch to celebrate this milestone. There was wine, cake, singing and chat.

Pam is now the proud owner of a new   trolley bag - top of the range ! which was bought from a collection from all her friends. Pam was rendered speechless but had a fab afternoon made all the better as this was a birthday party she enjoyed with friends and ladies from across the section.

As lady captain I was honoured to be the one who presented Pam with her card and wished her a terrific celebration. Pam even joined in with the singing - happy birthday to me!

So as Pam laughs in the attached photo all that is left to say is a big cheers and enjoy the rest of the celebrations.

Lady Captains Report – August 2015

July began with us hosting our new event to the calendar for some years ‘Ladies Invitation Day’, we had guests from 10 different clubs join our ladies to play in a pairs betterball competition and a team pink lady competition. The day was successful in that we can add this to the fixture list for next year. I thank all the ladies who supported the day this year and I am sure it will grow now that we have road tested it after many years of not holding such an event at the club. Jill Gambling and her guest Sandy were our overall winners on the day with a great score of 45 points. The pink lady team winners were Sue Stickland and Helen Cornwell along with their guests for the day.

Our ladies continue to travel far and wide to opens and I hear we are winning prizes and ensuring that West Malling is on the map.  We are in the final stages of preparation for our own open and I do hope that the section provides support to the day as this is one of our main fund raisers for the ladies section throughout the year along with our medals and stablefords competitions.  Lisa has everything under control and I am looking forward to the day.

Thanks go to the Bradley Cook Team who did get to the second round of playing for the plate but marginally lost out to Chislehurst at the weekend. Sue Stickland captained the team and my thanks go to her for sorting out the matches and keeping us updated with progress via blog posts.

We have had great success and progress to date in the Tappin Trophy and wish our ladies well in their semi-final match against Sidcup on 21st August.  It is a home draw so I am sure there will be supporters on the course to cheer our team of three to victory. Only time will tell and Carol Martin the team captain will no doubt keep us up to date.

We played our club championship weekend at the end of July and although the weather wasn’t kind as we were all very wet we do have prize winners from across the section. Congratulations have been extended to everyone especially our Handicap winner Elaine Katter who was thrilled to win the trophy and our Club Champion for 2015 Lydia Doherty who had 2 good days on the course. A full write up was posted on the blog.

Thankfully, last weekend the weather was much improved and we had the match all set with the Pegasus golf society where our aim was to win back the salver. We had success and there is a photo on the blog with most of the team after our 3½/2½ victory.  The gentlemen were fun and there was lots of banter which began as we were treated to a pre match breakfast.

The club captain held a fun team Texas Scramble day on Sunday 2nd August and our ladies supported the event and had separate goodie bags given to them.  There was a good club atmosphere created on the day and it was nice to see Russ enjoy his role as captain.  Money raised for the Freddie Farmer foundation was in excess of £2000 and Freddie himself made an appearance on the day.

Sign up sheets have been posted for matches and events during September and October so hopefully diaries can be coordinated to ensure as many people join in as possible, we are hoping to get the trophy back from the Vets and play against the Merlins team and the rescheduled match against the Wednesday Boys.  An updated diary has also been posted in the changing room which aligns with changes previously communicated.  Our new topsy turvy mixed competition is causing a stir as the mens championship is being held the day before meaning the tees will be at the back making the challenge of playing of the white tees interesting for the ladies taking part. Gill and Shirley are busy drumming up support for this new fun event to our calendar and I am sure the men will find it a challenge playing off our Red tees.

So as ever I finish with wishing you all continued good golf enjoying the remainder of the summer - swing slow ladies.

Regards g

Pegasus plate returned to ladies 1/8

Saturday saw the sun shine on our 12 strong ladies team as we won the plate back from the Pegasus golf society.

Generous Bob Appleby organised his team and bought breakfast for everyone mid morning on Saturday. We then announced the matches and playing order as we knew our pairings and set out to try and win the plate back which we lost last year.

The banter began early and lasted until we said goodbye. The gents were gracious in defeat and congratulated the ladies on the golf played. The result was 3 & a half / 2 & a half. So well done to all the team most of whom posed above ....

The missing pair were Gill Newson and Jean Alback. We were also cheered on by Jane and Lisa.

Well done to everyone and I am sure everyone looks forward to next year.

BRADLEY COOK AGAINST CHISLEHURST

Tuesday 28th July at West Malling

We had our first leg of the quarter final match against Chislehurst today in very tricky conditions with gusting winds.
Lindsay put up a good fight but was unfortunately out played and lost 5 & 3. My match against my opponent was close for the front nine but she pulled away and won 4 & 3. Jane had a very close match that was nip and tuck all the way and finally beat her on the 18th to win 1 up. Debbie also had a very close match and also beat her opponent on the 18th to win 1 up. Julie was playing her very first Bradley Cook match and did not disappoint! She beat her lady 7 &6. Overall we won 3 - 2 with exactly the same amount of games won.

Saturday 1st August at Chilsehurst.

We today played at Chislehurst with high hopes of a victory but it was not to be. Lindsay led us out and had a really good game against the same lady she played at West Malling but was defeated 4 & 3.
I also had the same opponent and it was all very close on the front 9 but then she pulled away with fantastic putts and a chip in aswell. I lost 6 & 5. Lydia continued her wonderful golf from the Ladies Championship and beat her lady 6 & 5. Jill played well but was denied a win this time and lost 2 & 1.
Julie once again played her heart out but unfortunately was beaten on the day by a formidable opponent and lost 3 & 2. We lost overall 4 -1.

Thanks to all the ladies that have participated this year in the Bradley Cook - Lindsay, Lydia, Jane,Debbie, Donna, Fin, Jill and Julie. Well played everyone and let's hope we can go further next year.
