Ladies
What a lovely day we had on 19 August 2014.
As vice captain the job of organising the open was bestowed upon me. A pleasure from start to finish. Thankfully it is now off my desk so I can concentrate on the 2015 calendar.
Here is a round up of what made the west malling ladies open 2014......
Getting the entries in is a moment in itself - we aim for 32 teams and maybe we get there maybe we don't. This year we made our target even if my personal target was 25! Then come July the entries came in thick and fast and at least one team was disappointed but we hope they get their entry in on time next year!
So after the draw was distributed we concentrated on getting the day right.
Our ladies are seasoned professionals.
At 8am - We put the gazebo up near to the 8th only to discover we were missing a roof which was found and fitted in time for the start of the day. PHEW!!
Judith and Carol E manned the reception desk and extended a warm welcome.
Carol M sold the raffle tickets and organised the sweep table - £346 goes in the lady captains charity pot. It seemed like the prizes where spread around too.
Rena ensured support for the 2's was covered and the 3 winners were very happy with the £24 prize money.
.... and then we were out on the course.....
John A our club captain started the ladies on the first and John H started the 13th tee.
We are not sure how much flirting went on but there was much laughter. It was lucky as the wind was cold at the beginning of the day. The rain stayed away too and thankfully it warmed up a little.
We had an army of ball spotters - Gill H / Denise /Diana / Margaret /Stella /Anne J/Jennie / Debbie C/ Sue S/Helen V/ Helen C -
Carol E, Judith & Rena even ventured out after the clubhouse was empty and spotted for a while. Emails received since have praised you all, it is certainly a points saver having someone around. I personally would love it in a medal round!
More men also helped out too which really showed our club off - Steve Mc/ Eric /Steve D/Lee/
Joe also drove our lady captain around for a bit.
The field moved well around the course with most ladies complaining about the 14th and by how hard our par 3s are. Scoring was as expected. The winners had a great score of 91pts and defended the title they won last year - the team who won : the three degrees from Stonelees.
Along the way Viv and Wendy ensured all our guests were given a welcome break at a very inviting halfway hut. Pimms o'clock arrived on the spitfire and continued for a few hours.
Our ladies began finishing at 130pm and the buffet opened at 2. There was much laughter and talk of the rounds had by everyone. The shop was again busy and the sale popular.
The shop with Ashley and the team did us proud again this year along with the management team at west malling ensuring our open prizes are the ones to win.
We had some very happy ladies who hit the shop after the prize presentation and some ladies who will return to try the course out again as they won a complimentary 3ball.
Thanks to Julie for ensuring the score cards added up even if some needed recalculating to ensure everything was fair and right! There was certainly some creative accounting handed in.
And an end to a day and the open for 2014. We have received thanks for our hospitality ...
...and we thank everyone involved for the time and effort to make sure west malling was shown at its best.
All that remains to do is to pay the bill and give everyone involved Big pats on the back .....it must be time for a well earned drink? so I will sign off by saying CHEERS one and all.
Georgina
