Lady Captains Report September 2014.

Well August was always going to be a busy month and it certainly was. The first event was the annual Ladies v Pegasus match, and what a fun day was had by all. Plenty of banter and some great golf. Unfortunately the Pegasus lads become the victors this year. But the Ladies certainly put up a solid fight. Just losing out on the last hole in the last match to see the lads finish 5 1/2 matches to 4 1/2. My thanks to Bob Appleby for arranging again, such a brilliant day.

Unfortunately our first mixed competition for August had to be abandoned on the 9th hole due to severe weather. But my thanks go to all those that braved the elements and started to play. Also a huge thanks to everyone that kindly donated there entrance money to my charity. Once everyone had dried off the usual banter continued in the bar, helped by Georgina who very generously bought everyone a drink due to her Hole in One the previous day. Well done Georgina.

The next big event for August was the annual Ladies open our chance to show off the club and entertain all the visiting Ladies. And what a lot we had, again 32 teams descended on West Malling. The weather had been booked and everyone was in place to welcome our visitors. Thanks to our Vice-Captain Georgina every detail had been taken care of. Even down to the time slot in which I had to get chanced for the prize giving. A full report from the day is on the blog, but I would like to mention two Ladies who every year work tirelessly on our behave running the half way hut. Viv and Wendy thank you so much. The Pimms went down very well (Hic).

The Inter society Competition is always a popular event and the Ladies entered with enthusiasm. Even walking off with the 3rd prize. Well done to Georgina, Julie, Sticky and yours truly.

The second mixed for august the friendship cup was played in better weather and the results are on the blog and will be covered in the mixed comp report.

One of the big events for any captain is her away day and this year i choose the Weald of Kent for my competition. 28 Ladies turned up for bacon butties all in good spirits. 18 holes of golf was played and then dinner was served in our own dining room. We had some great scores in and the prizes went to 1st Julie Harris 37 points, 2nd Stella Pitt 36pts and 3rd Carol Eldridge 35 pts. Nearest the pin went to Julie Harris, Longest drive Silver Sue Stickland, Longest drive Bronze Gill Harmen, Nearest the pin in two Helen Venis and Caroline Harrison who was in the hole for her second shot. Also a special prize went to Helen Cornwell and a donated prize of a free golf lesson from Ashley went to Jennie Aldridge. Well done to all the winners.

Even though the weather had been booked one Lady happened to get extremely wet, thanks again to yours truly who just happened to nominate her for the Ice Bucket Challenge. Georgina thought she was going to get away with it, I had other ideas and so after speaking nicely to the barman 8 ice buckets appeared. I have to say what a great sport Georgina was. There is photographic evidence if anyone wants to see it. Many thanks to the Ladies for donation another £33 pounds to my charity.

The other competitions played in August will be covered in the competition reports and the results are already on the blog.

Just a reminder about your stableford and medal cards. We should all be looking to complete the all-important six cards to qualify you to play in next year’s trophy competitions. The competition book is upstairs in the changing rooms for you to check to see if you have met the criteria. Both Lisa Kiddie and myself have access to the handicap system if anyone is not sure how many they have down we can check for you.

Lastly September’s diary is just a full and all the sign-up sheets are in the changing rooms, if anyone hasn’t been able to get to the club and would like to be included in any event please contact anyone from the committee and we can point you to the person in charge. Also I need Ladies to represent the section against the Vets, Thursday 18th September. Always a fun day.  Please ring me or add your name to the list. Many Thanks.

Good Luck with your golf in September.

Best Wishes Jane.

Final Friendly Report - 2014

Home to Kings Hill - Hurricane success 3/1
Played on the Hurricane which was a welcome change to the ladies of Kings Hill. We won 3 / 1 so well done to everyone who played.
Continuing our run of straight home victories.
Tea was served and the chef again complimented. We even accommodated the dietary requirements sent in advance!!

Home to St Augustine's- Last but not least
The ladies from St Augustine's travelled far for us to play our final friendly fixture of the season.
After an early lunch we were out on the course - or nearly!   Tee times were booked but as the first group tee'd off we were told we should be on the Hurricane and not the Spitfire!! So a slight false start but we all enjoyed matches in what turned out to be a very humid day where the sun tried and failed to shine through. Some of the St Augustine ladies got their wish and played the Hurricane which threw up its challenges as ever. Our WM ladies had happy faces though as we were successful yet again in securing our final friendly victory of the season with a result of 3/1.  Well done to the team.

Results round up for the season  ...One loss and the rest WINS. Well done ladies!! .

Finally, again I thank everyone for their support throughout the season. We have had great success and hopefully everyone enjoyed taking part. Organising has been a pleasure and I think that you all manage your diaries beautifully so thank you as I have only had a few last minute changes and reserves were on hand to step in.
This year we used the Hurricane course as a change and this was well received. Tea's were good and all our guests were pleased with our hospitality.  We were able to add 2 new fixtures to the calendar and they have been confirmed for next year when we welcome Nizels to West Malling and we visit Redlibbetts.

My favourite - silly facts & stats:
  • Over the season we have had  over 30 ladies make up the West Malling Team from across the section - showing we are match play ready!!  Rena I am sure has been in touch for your help during the winter in the Pearson which kicks off soon - if not the sign up sheet is in the changing room.
  • There have been different team captains
  • We have played 1296  holes of golf in the friendlies over a summer which was kind to us weather wise.  I am not going to take a guess at how many swings/shots that equates to!  except to say ALOT!!
  • The West Malling team have served up 80 individual post match teas and some yummy cake which some of our number smuggled home to share with loved ones.
  • And my top stat - We won 27½ matches out of a total of 36 - a really good record for any section.

And so we plan for 2015 and continuing the friendly fixtures with another possible new fixture at Westerham which I am waiting to confirm. Sign up sheets will go up in early 2015 so that you can plan your opens / friendlies and more golf.

I wish you a lovely end to the season and look forward to your continued support in 2015.

Ladies
What a lovely day we had on 19 August 2014.

As vice captain the job of organising the open was bestowed upon me. A pleasure from start to finish. Thankfully it is now off my desk so I can concentrate on the 2015 calendar.

Here is a round up of what made the west malling ladies open 2014......

Getting the entries in is a moment in itself -  we aim for 32 teams and maybe we get there maybe we don't. This year we made our target even if my personal target was 25! Then come July the entries came in thick and fast and at least one team was disappointed but we hope they get their entry in on time next year!

So after the draw was distributed we concentrated on getting the day right.

Our ladies are seasoned professionals.
At 8am - We put the gazebo up near to the 8th only to discover we were missing a roof which was found and fitted in time for the start of the day.  PHEW!!

Judith and Carol E manned the reception desk and extended a warm welcome.

Carol M sold the raffle tickets and organised the sweep table - £346 goes in the lady captains charity pot. It seemed like the prizes where spread around too.

Rena ensured support for the 2's was covered and the 3 winners were very happy with the £24 prize money.

.... and then we were out on the course.....

John A our club captain started the ladies on the first and John H started the 13th tee.
We are not sure how much flirting went on but there was much laughter. It was lucky as the wind was cold at the beginning of the day. The rain stayed away too and thankfully it warmed up a little.

We had an army of ball spotters - Gill H / Denise /Diana / Margaret /Stella /Anne J/Jennie / Debbie C/ Sue S/Helen V/ Helen C -
Carol E, Judith & Rena even ventured out after the clubhouse was empty and spotted for a while.  Emails received since have praised you all, it is certainly a points saver having someone around. I personally would love it in a medal round!

More men also helped out too which really showed our club off - Steve Mc/ Eric /Steve D/Lee/

Joe also drove our lady captain around for a bit.

The field moved well around the course with most ladies complaining about the 14th and by how hard our par 3s are. Scoring was as expected. The winners had a great score of 91pts and defended the title they won last year - the team who won : the three degrees from Stonelees.

Along the way Viv and Wendy ensured all our guests were given a welcome break at a very inviting halfway hut. Pimms o'clock arrived on the spitfire and continued for a few hours.

Our ladies began finishing at 130pm and the buffet opened at 2. There was much laughter and talk of the rounds had by everyone. The shop was again busy and the sale popular.
The shop with Ashley and the team did us proud again this year along with the management team at west malling ensuring our open prizes are the ones to win.
We had some very happy ladies who hit the shop after the prize presentation and some ladies who will return to try the course out again as they won a complimentary 3ball.

Thanks to Julie for ensuring the score cards added up even if some needed recalculating to ensure everything was fair and right! There was certainly some creative accounting handed in.

And an end to a day and the open for 2014. We have received thanks for our hospitality ...
...and we thank everyone involved for the time and effort to make sure west malling was shown at its best.

All that remains to do is to pay the bill and give everyone involved Big pats on the back  .....it must be time for a well earned drink?  so I will sign off by saying CHEERS one and all.

Georgina

Mixed Tunisian results!

Sunday 10th August saw the Mixed Greensome Tunisian competition, 26 couples entered – a great turnout, what could possibly go wrong !!!. Well we started off and it was light rain, by the time the first group were at the 5th it was pouring- then by the 8th it was thunder and lightening.  So match abandoned.  Thank you to everyone for at least turning up and the ones that played. So we all headed for the bar, hot drinks all round and then as our VC- Georgina had got a brilliant Hole In One on the 3rd (spitfire and in her Kip Pullin Match to boot)  the drinks were on her…Great job George.
A special thank you to all of you that donated your entry fee to Jane’s charity, so generous.
The next competition is the Friendship cup and that is 31st August and don’t forget to sign up for Joe’s Raiders 14th September. Fun, Fun, Fun
Thanks for all the support

Bradley Cook Semi Final 1st Leg

We went to Wrotham today for the first leg of the semi final in the Bradley Cook Plate competition.  We lost 3-2 but all the games were close.  Finella, Lindsay and Debbie narrowly lost, Sue won 1-up Helen won 2&1.
Wrotham put out a very strong team and we did amazingly well to keep it close away from home.  It augurs well for the home match - remember we are unbeaten at home this season!
A BIG thank you to all the team, but especially Finella for stepping in at the last minute and Debbie for re-arranging work to give me a full team.  I REALLY appreciate it.
Home match Tuesday 26 August first tee time 11am, so if you are around please feel free to wear your purple jumpers and support the team!!
Well Done Girls :)
Helen x
p.s. thanks to Jane for coming to support - I think she had heard there was cake on offer (it was yummy) !

Lady Captains Report August 2014.

Well yet again another FUN packed month of golf, helped enormously by the great British summer.  Long may it continue. Last month saw yet again another two friendlies, a mixed flag, Club championship, Pro shop charity evening and the ladies challenge v the Pegasus boys. Reports from all the above can be viewed on the blog.

The Club championship is  a 36 hole medal competition played over the same weekend on both courses. This year we had the courses to ourselves which allowed us to relax and enjoy the end of the men’s competition. My thanks go to all the ladies that participated and supported this event. My congratulation go also to the prize winners and to our new ladies champion this year Donna Chuter. It’s nice to see a new name on the trophy. Well done Donna.

On the Monday night following the Club Championship the Pro shop boys ran there fun team charity event with all proceeds split between the Men’s and Ladies charities. A fun night was had by all. Great turn out from the Ladies and what a result two ladies teams walking off with first and second places.  Well done. A big thanks to Duncan and the boys for sponsoring this event. Final amount raised will be posted on the blog.

Last month was to see two of our inter club challenges being played unfortunately we had to postpone the Ladies v Wednesday boys match but that has now been moved to Wednesday the 20th August. So I’m hoping that all the ladies that are giving up there Tuesday that week to help at the Ladies open will support this event. As ever sign-up sheets are in the usual place.

The second Ladies v Men’s challenge event verses the Pegasus boys took place last Saturday and what a great sporting event this turned out to be. As we were defending our title it was all to play for. Everybody entering into the spirit of the day and some great fun golf was played. Lots of banter, fun and laughter. Resulting in a very narrow win for the boys 5 ½ games to 4 ½ . It all game down to the last match and a valiant effort from Sally and Shirley, who’s superb putt on the 18th resulted in the drawn match. Again a big thanks to Bob Appleby for arranging this comp and to Sally, Fenella and Martin aka Martina for standing in at the last minute.

This month we host out ladies Open and it’s our chance to welcome Ladies from other clubs to West Malling. We have had another great response this year and 31 teams will be transcending on us. A lot of hard work has already been put in to ensuring the day runs smoothly and I’m asking everyone to please support us on the day. We all benefit from this as a section. Even if you can only spare an hour or two ball spotting every little helps. Again please look at the notice boards for more details. As previously mentioned we do have the Wednesday boy’s match the next day so you won’t miss out on your golf.

As you will have noticed the work to the 1st and 2nd holes on the Spitfire has now commenced and all I ask is for your patience whilst this is being completed.

Good Luck with your golf in August.

Best Wishes Jane.

Today was the day we were to thrash the Pegasus , unfortunately after a valiant effort from all the ladies involved we lost on the 18th green. Despite an amazing putt from Shirley to half the final match. Final score 5 and a half to the men and 4 and a half to the ladies. Well played to everyone. My thanks to Bob Appleby and the gents from the Pegasus for a fun filled day. Great golf and brilliant banter. Roll on next year.
New date for your diaries Wednesday 20th August rearrange match v the Wednesday boys. Sign up sheet in Ladies changing room.
