Lady Captains Report – June 2015

We began May saying goodbye to Viv Allen.  It was amazing to see the outpouring of love felt for Viv and the opportunity to join her family and friends in a celebration of her life where we learnt so much more about her life and loves.  At the Kings Arms there is a memorial bench for Viv which is very elegant just like her and I am sure this gives comfort to her loved ones.  The collection across the section amassed £500 which was split equally to the two nominated charities so hopefully this will join other donations and these will make a real difference. We look forward to seeing Roy playing more regularly at the club and I am sure he and the rest of the family have felt the love.

The rest of the month has been full again with plenty of golf days and sunshine.

The Pearson team battled with home and away fixtures against Sittingbourne but our 2015 campaign came to an end on the 22nd.  I would like to congratulate the team for all their efforts and for giving their all in the matches which were close but victory was not to be.  Rena captained the team again and took some tough decisions so my thanks go to her for a great job in 2014/15 season and to Judith for her support as the newly appointed banana lady. Our supporters are never far away and to see a friendly face in the middle of a match is very appreciated so thank you to all of you for the time given during the season.

Thank you continues as Jeannette and Bernie led a quiz nite on 15th May and ensured most of us were left scratching our heads with some of the testing questions they dug out for the occasion.  We added to the charity by over £300 which is fantastic along with the 13 teams who came along and supported the evening. We look forward to another in October.
The friendlies continue and we had one at home and one away during the month which I was able to play in.  Nizels at home was a good afternoon and we sat in the sunshine after the match enjoying tea and cake which was a treat – we won all our matches which was a great result against a good team – my playing partner Molly certainly provided me with lots of on the course entertainment on the day. Then we headed off to Redlibbets.where we lost as a team but enjoyed the hospitality of the ladies who I know well from my time at the club.  The course was in great condition and everyone seemed to have a lovely day including my playing partner Elaine Katter who doesn’t usually play in the friendlies but realised it is a good opportunity to hone those matchplay skills!  Lisa continues to enjoy setting them up and write ups are on the blog.

On Sunday 17 May, I enjoyed a lovely day in the sunshine caddying with Donna Chuter our reigning club champion who represented West Malling in the Kent County Champion of Champions at Littlestone, a links course, so a different style of play was required.  Donna won against her playing partners and putted lovely in tough conditions.  No prizes for us but we were treated to a nice lunch and it was nice to spend time with Donna who was great company.

Next up was the Swinging 60s Texas Scramble day followed by lunch.  I was able to join the day as I fitted it around work along with Lisa. The day was organised by Eunice and Pam and it was a great happy day with prizes galore and there was attendance from some club elders who joined the lunch.  I was even sent some photos from the day which certainly brought a smile to my face last week. Being a special guest was a treat as I am some way off joining this group!

We said farewell to Margaret Hoban.  The funeral was at her local church and lots of ladies were able to attend to pay respects on behalf of the section. We sent a donation to the chosen charity as flowers were not requested. Due to Pearson I was not able to attend but heard it was a lovely service.

Our final event of May was our mixed away day to Boughton where there were good scores, a good lunch and well organised again by Gill who has put a write up on the Blog.
We moved the Ladies vs the Men day planned for 31 May to 11 October as lots of people were away so hopefully we will be able to run the rescheduled event then, the sign up sheet has been put up on the mixed notice board already.  All was not lost though as we ran an impromptu competition for 32 people and enjoyed a scrummy lunch afterwards. The weather although a little wet did not dampen the mood as guests joined golfers.

There will be no let-up in June.   The pace continues with Lady Captain’s day on 7th June.  I am really pleased that so many ladies are looking forward to our own day playing the Hurricane followed by a lunch and I am lucky that I have lots of help from family and friends on the day who are also able to join us and meet everyone.  I then complete my challenge to Paris (thankfully the time has nearly arrived) and I look forward to the celebration on the 13 – 15 June. We have some treats planned in Paris and I am sure all the people that Joe and I meet along the way will provide us with some great times. The charity money still blows me away and I am grateful to everyone for their generosity, it has been great to share the year with friends, colleagues and clients outside of the golf club who now know about West Malling Golf Club and are eager to support.

Finally, my congratulations go to all the winners during May and as we enter June we can look forward to the first hole on the Spitfire being opened for the Masters Weekend  - so it is all exciting along with all the comps, opens and matches that are organised.  I wish you continued good golfing.  Swing slow.

Regards g
